Advent :: Day 21

Day 21 — Monday, December 24

LAST DAY OF ADVENT

Take a moment now of reflective silence and ponder all that you have experienced on your Advent journey as it draws to its conclusion. Rejoice, for tomorrow the angels will announce the birth of our Lord, all our hopes and fears will come together and be laid at the feet of the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes.

May the Lord bless you in this time of silence before God’s silence is broken forevermore. Fill it with your anticipation and prayers deep within your heart, knowing that the Holy Spirit intercedes for us with intercessions too deep even for our own words.

Scripture

Luke 1:67-79

His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied: “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because He has come to His people and redeemed them. He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David (as He said through His holy prophets of long ago), salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us— to show mercy to our ancestors and to remember His holy covenant, the oath He swore to our father Abraham: to rescue us from the hand of our enemies, and to enable us to serve Him without fear in holiness and righteousness before Him all our days. And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for Him, to give His people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace.”

Meditation

What Child is This, William Chatterton Dix, 1865
Stanzas 1-3

What Child is this who, laid to rest
On Mary’s lap is sleeping?
Whom Angels greet with anthems sweet,
While shepherds watch are keeping?
This, this is Christ the King,
Whom shepherds guard and Angels sing;
Haste, haste, to bring Him laud,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

Why lies He in such mean estate,
Where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christians, fear, for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading.
Nails, spear shall pierce Him through,
The cross be borne for me, for you.
Hail, hail the Word made flesh,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh,
Come peasant, king to own Him;
The King of kings salvation brings,
Let loving hearts enthrone Him.
Raise, raise a song on high,
The virgin sings her lullaby.
Joy, joy for Christ is born,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

Prayer

Father, You have brought us this far in hopeful expectation. We are confident that Your mighty hand and great power are sufficient to lead us all the way home. Awaken our hearts as we open them to You. Live in us, Christ with us, for Your glory. Amen.
